Today is the deadline to add players to the roster if a team wants to have them as an option for the playoffs.
Phillies did indeed claim lefty reliever Tim Mayza off waivers from Pittsburgh, as @AlexJStumpf reported. Mayza was on a rehab assignment; hasn't pitched in majors since April. Millersville product.
It's an interesting choice to make since Mayza is still hurt, but there are some possibilities here.
The Philadelphia Phillies claimed LHP Tim Mayza off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
For his career, Mayza has been tough on left handed hitters, holding them to a .215/.266/.306 line over the course of a few seasons.
For the sake of the kids, don't look at what right handed hitters do, but that wouldn't be his job.
With Jose Alvarado out for the potential October run, the team would like to have another option that would help with left handed hitters, so Mayza is that option.
Mayza will be reunited with another former Blue Jay, Jordan Romano who is also trying to get back on track after a tough season so far with the Phillies.
The team currently has a full 40-man roster, but Zack Wheeler hasn't been placed on the 60-day injured list, which doing so would open up that spot. It's another arm to help down the stretch.
Will former Blue Jays lefty Tim Mayza be effective for the Phillies out of the bullpen?
