The Philadelphia Phillies have re-signed former Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Tim Mayza.
The Philadelphia Phillies brought back left-handed pitcher Tim Mayza on Saturday, re-signing him shortly after he opted out of his minor league deal and was released by the club.
LHP Tim Mayza and INF/OF Dylan Moore requested and received their release yesterday (3/21). Today (3/22), each was signed to a major league contract. Additionally, yesterday (3/21), the Phillies returned RHP Zach McCambley to the Miami Marlins.
Mayza will be looking to rebound from an injury plagued couple of seasons
Mayza, 34, still stands as something of a rebound candidate, in addition to missing the bulk of the 2025 season due to a lat strain, the longtime Blue Jays southpaw was roughed up for a 6.33 ERA in 42 2/3 innings between Toronto and the Yankees in 2024.
His last full, healthy and productive season came with the Blue Jays in 2023, when he turned in 53 1/3 innings with a tiny 1.52 ERA, a 24.7% strikeout rate, a 7% walk rate and a huge 58.2% ground-ball rate.
Mayza typically sits 93-94 mph with a sinker he throws more than two-thirds of the time. (He averaged 93.6 mph on the pitch in 2025.)
He's a two-pitch lefty, complementing that worm-burning two-seamer with a slider that generally sits 86-87 mph (87.1 mph in '25).
Historically, right-handed hitters have found success against him, compiling a .281/.350/.474 slash line over his career.
Left-handed batters, however, have had a much tougher time, managing just a .214/.266/.304 line against the veteran southpaw.
Now healthy again, Mayza will be looking to put together a solid full season of work to add to an otherwise inconsistent resume.
