Yariel Rodriguez balked a runner home then gave up a home run to Alex Bregman to get things started.
As the Blue Jays offence continued to sputter Wednesday night against the Red Sox, hitting coach David Popkins began to get fed up with home-plate umpire Derek Thomas's strike zone.
Popkins was ejected in the bottom of the fourth inning for arguing balls and strikes by Thomas after catcher Alejandro Kirk took a changeup on the outside corner for a called strike three.
Kirk walked away looking frustrated and replays showed that Popkins was ejected after the at-bat.
Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito appeared to be getting a favourable zone on the outside corner to right-handed hitters through the first four innings.
Through those first four innings, Toronto trailed 4-0 and had managed three hits and a walk.
Carlos Narvaez's two-run homer in the sixth gave Boston a 6-0 lead that evaporated over the next two innings.
Back to Back home runs from Daulton Varsho and Alejandro Kirk cut the Red Sox lead in half in the sixth inning.
Anthony Santander's three-run blast in the seventh inning tied the game 6-6 to force extra innings for Toronto. (14-16).
Kirk came to the plate with the bases loaded after Red Sox manager Alex Cora decided to issue intentional walks to George Springer and Daulton Varsho to load the bases.
Kirk's RBI single in the 10th inning completed the Blue Jays' comeback for a 7-6 win over the Boston Red Sox at Rogers Centre.
Jeff Hoffman also recorded his 500th strike out.
"Jeff Hoffman could be one of the best moves this front office has made in a long time. The talent is obvious, but there's a little fuck-you to him, too. Just a perfect fit in the closer's role." - Keegan Matheson
