What would a walk up Bremner Boulevard on game day be without this familiar call echoing out: «LET'S GO BLUE JAYS!» followed by a series of drumbeats.
Originally from Chicago, Rick Donaldson AKA «Rockin' Rick» or «The Blue Jays drummer,» has been stationed outside Gates 5 and 6 at the since the stadium opened in 1989.
He's as much of the Blue Jays experience as there ever has been at Rogers Centre.
Whether the team was good, bad or somewhere in between, he always brings the noise and helps fans get amped up before walking through the turnstiles.
After 36 years 'Rockin Rick' Donaldson has decided to retire
Blue Jays superfan Supendra Chandrakumar also reiterated Rockin Rick Donaldson's forthcoming retirement.
Rockin' Rick is officially retiring after this season! He has been bringing the beats outside the Rogers Centre since 1989 ⚾🥁💙
Rockin' Rick, you'll be missed. Your voice and hype beats made every game day feel special💙 Enjoy your retirement!😊 #WANTITALL
As I write this I'm flooded with memories of Rick letting my kids and others bang on his drums over the years. I had no idea until today that he'd been doing it for 36 of them.
Hopefully the Blue Jays continue to win all the way to a World Series, so fans can appreciate and enjoy Rick Donaldson one last time before he calls it a career.
The Rogers Centre experience on game day won't be the same without the Blue Jays drummer.
