The Blue Jays have signed two new pitchers

The Blue Jays' extra pool money for international free agents continues to pay off. The team has announced the signings of RHP Cristhian Duarte and RHP Edwin Veras. Both youngsters have been assigned to the Dominican Summer Leauge.
Duarte is originally from Havana, Cuba and originally arrived in the Dominican Republic in 2023. Veras is a DR local, hailing from the Mejia sector of the municipality of Navarette, which is in the northwestern part of the country, 25 miles north of Santiago de Los Caballeros, the country's second largest city.
According to Spanish Language MLB Insider and prospect watcher Francys Romero, Duarte signed for $150K. He also becomes the 22nd Cuban national to sign with a major league team during the 2024-2025 IFA signing period.
Duarte is just 17, while Veras is slightly older at 21.
Duarte boasts a strong, four-pitch arsenal, with a fastball that tops out at around 93 mph. He also a sinker, changeup, and slider, that average from 81-89mph.
Less is known about Veras, but according to the Facebook page Soy Navarette he has been slogging it out in the DR for quite some time.
Like with most of the Blue Jays IFAs, the two pitchers won't head to the minors straight away and instead will head stick with the DSL Blue Jays in the Dominican Republic.
Also, like many IFA signings around the league, Duarte and Veras represent low-cost, low-risk depth pieces with high upsides. Many never make the major leagues, and many don't stick with their original teams.
Who knows though, many the Blue Jays get lucky and find another Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
It could happen.
