Yariel Rodriguez will soon be looking for a new home. No, the Blue Jays right-hander hasn't been traded, demoted, or DFA'd, rather his agency is shutting down.
Rodriguez is among a handful of major leaguers represented by
William Morris Endeavours (WME), an agency which is much more known for representing Hollywood's top film and television stars.
However, they expanded their reach into professional sports several years ago and besides Rodriguez, their roster includes former Blue Jay Taijuan Walker, Jack Leiter, Austin Wells, Anthony Volpe, and Ian Happ.
Now however, according to baseball insider
Francys Romero, they are shutting down their baseball division. They are currently in the process of seeking a buyer for all their clients.
It doesn't appear that WME, who also represents broadcasters, executives, and many professional basketball players, is shuttering the entirety of its sports wing. In his post to X, Romero specifically mentioned that it was agency's baseball division that was shutting down.
No word yet on why WME decided to make that decision.
Much like film stars, it is not that uncommon for professional agents to switch agencies early on - or even midway through - in their careers. Some do it by choice, others are dropped for financial or other business reasons. But like all professionals, they always end up on their feet.
If WME can successfully find a buyer, it is likely that Rodriguez will simply be moved over to whomever the new company is. It is also possible that he moves on - or is dropped as a client - and signs with a new agency entirely.
Whatever happens, Rodriguez will have answers soon enough.
