Already talk of trading Chris Bassitt

Do the Blue Jays have a Chris Bassitt problem? The number four starter has arguably been the team's strongest member of the rotation in the early part of the 2025 season.
While the Blue Jays are one game under .500 - sitting at 12-13 after losing five in a row - Bassitt has started the season strong, having a 2-1 record with a 1.88 ERA through his first five starts.
However, he is also 36 and in the last year of his contract with the Blue Jays. Depending on how the rehabs of Ricky Tiedemann and Alek Manoah go, there may not a be a role for Bassitt on the Jays next season.
If the Blue Jays struggles persist and they once again become sellers at the trade deadline, Bassitt would be a prime candidate to be dealt.
While he likely won't be an ace for a contending team, there are plenty who would take on a mid-rotation rental as they make a final push for the playoffs.
Bleacher Report's Joe Reuter talked about the intrigue of a player like Bassitt.
«His 1.02 FIP leads all qualified starters by a wide margin. If the Blue Jays fall out of the AL East race early, he could be one of the prizes of this year's trade deadline.»
The trade wouldn't be a blockbuster, but Bassitt could net the Blue Jays a nice return. It would likely include a couple of prospects, one of whom would be major-league ready, as well as bullpen help or a back-up infielder. Or a power bat.
While it's still April and the Blue Jays have plenty of time to become a contending team, their continuing struggles and lack of power makes everybody wonder.
Hopefully, it doesn't come to that.
