We have our first crazy rumour of the 2025 Major League Baseball season! ESPN's David Schoenfeld named the Blue Jays among a handful of teams that could land superstar third baseman Nolan Arenado.
While it's a bold statement to make, it's not entirely that far-fetched. The Cardinals have made no secret that Arenado is on the trading block and the Blue Jays could use an upgrade offensively at 3rd base.
Ernie Clement and Will Wagner are hitting a combined -0.1 fWAR and a WRC+ of 59. Those numbers aren't great to say the least, although has been coming around in his last few games.
"(Arenado is) off to an excellent start -- with more walks than strikeouts while hitting for average -- so that could create some interest, and there are certainly teams that could use an upgrade at third base," - David Schoenfeld
The Blue Jays aren't the only listed however, as Schoenfeld believes that the Cubs, Phillies, and Yankees could also be potential suitors. Wherever the potential Hall of Famer ends up, the Cardinals would likely have to eat a good portion of Arenado's salary, in addition to the third baseman waiving his no-trade clause.
Alec Bohm is struggling with the Phillies, the Cubs demoted Matt Shaw, the Blue Jays aren't getting any production at third, the Yankees have only one home run from their third basemen ... it's a long list. If the Cardinals pay down some of the contract, they could probably find Arenado a new home."
The return for Arenado would likely include some top prospects, at least one of whom would be a pitcher, and potentially a player on the major league roster.
So far, there is no indication the Blue Jays have shown any interest.
