The deadline for adding players to 40-man rosters is here. Teams had until 6 p.m. ET tonight to protect a player(s) from the Rule 5 Draft, which will take place Dec. 10 at the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla.
For those not in the know, players first signed at age 18 or younger must be added to 40-man rosters within five seasons or they become eligible to be drafted by other organizations through the Rule 5 process.
Players signed at 19 years or older have to be protected within four seasons. Clubs pay $100,000 to select a player in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft.
If that player doesn't stay on the 26-man roster for the full season, he must be offered back to his former team for $50,000.
Blue Jays secure Tiedemann in this years Rule 5 40-man deadline
The Blue Jays added
Tiedemann to the 40-man roster prior to the deadline today.
The lefty was working his way up the minor league ladder before an elbow injury in 2024 saw him land on the IL, eventually undergoing Tommy John surgery.
He missed all of 2025 while rehabbing and should be good to go in the new year.
A healthy Ricky Tiedemann could quicky become one of the biggest stories in #BlueJays camp. He's wildly talented and still just 23. If the coming months are "normal" for Tiedemann, he could have long-term potential in the rotation again or immediate star potential in the bullpen.
Over the course of three seasons in the minors, Tiedemann owns a 3.02 ERA and a 1.079 WHIP across 140 innings, with injuries limiting his time on the mound since being drafted in 2021.
When healthy, he's a strikeout artist, crafting a 14.5 K/9 with 226 strikeouts across all four levels in the Jays system.
