Toronto Blue Jays' President & CEO Mark Shapiro shared his thoughts on the possibility of Major League Baseball coming to Vancouver.
Momentum has been building around the idea of Vancouver securing an MLB expansion franchise, with increasing public and political interest.
City council has already taken a step forward by approving a motion to explore potential ownership groups for a team.
Among the names linked to a possible ownership group is Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, whose estimated net worth sits around $350 million USD.
Vancouver-based businessman Zack Ross is also reportedly playing a leading role in pushing the bid forward.
Although there are still many hurdles to clear before a franchise becomes reality, the proposal appears to be gaining real traction.
The conversation has even reached the Toronto Blue Jays’ front office.
“We are supportive of any effort to grow baseball in Canada, and that would include the opportunity to bring the MLB to Vancouver,” Shapiro said in an interview with Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith.
MLB not concerned with market overlap of two teams in Canada
The Blue Jays have been Canada’s only MLB team since the Montreal Expos relocated to Washington in 2004.
Since then, Toronto has effectively served as the nation’s team, drawing support from across the country, something players frequently highlight as a unique and energizing aspect of playing there.
However, MLB leadership doesn’t appear overly concerned about market overlap if another Canadian franchise is added.
Commissioner Rob Manfred indicated that “There’s no place you’re going to go where you’re not splitting the market,” in a conversation with Sportsnet's Shi Davidi.
If Vancouver were to land a team, it would likely mean relocating the Vancouver Canadians, the Blue Jays’ current High-A affiliate.
Still, many believe that would be a worthwhile trade-off for bringing MLB to the city.
This push aligns with MLB’s broader expansion plans, which aim to introduce two new franchises by late 2027 or early 2028, with both teams expected to begin play in the 2029 season.
