Former Toronto Blue Jays right-handed reliever Carl Edwards Jr. is on the move again.

The New York Mets announced Thursday that they have designated Carl Edwards Jr for assignment.
We have made the following roster moves.
The 34-year-old had signed a minor league contract with the club back in December.
He began the season working as a starter with Triple-A Syracuse before earning a call-up to the Mets’ bullpen earlier this month.
In limited action, Edwards has been effective, allowing just one run across six innings.
He’s struck out an impressive 44% of the hitters he’s faced (11 of 25), though control has been an issue at times, with four walks (16%).
Edwards first made his mark as a key bullpen arm for the Chicago Cubs from 2016 to 2018. Since then, he has become something of a journeyman, spending time with multiple teams over the past eight seasons.

Edwards Jr likely to become a free agent

The Mets represent his ninth major league club. Interestingly, his six innings this year already match his highest single-season workload since 2023.
He also enjoyed a solid stretch with the Washington Nationals in 2022–23.
Beyond those stops, his tenures have generally been brief, including appearances with the Padres, Mariners, Braves, Blue Jays, Angels, and Rangers, none of which saw him pitch more than six innings.
For his career, Edwards holds a respectable 3.51 ERA, though much of that success came during his earlier years with Chicago, when his fastball velocity was roughly three miles per hour higher than its current average of 92.5 mph.
The Mets now have five days to decide their next move, whether to trade him, release him, or place him on waivers.
If he clears waivers, Edwards has the service time needed to decline a minor league assignment, making free agency the most likely outcome unless a trade materializes.
The waiver process itself takes 48 hours, meaning his situation should be resolved within a week.
