The Blue Jays are skipping Eric Lauer's turn in the rotation, but that doesn't mean he's out of the starting mix.
With Shane Bieber set to make his Toronto debut on Friday against the Miami Marlins, the Blue Jays announced their rotation plans for the series.
The plan calls for Lauer to be available out of the bullpen for this series. Jose Berrios will start Saturday, followed by Kevin Gausman on Sunday.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters it is not a permanent move to the bullpen for Lauer.
"It's going to be a fluid situation," Schneider said ahead of Wednesday's game. "For that series he'll be available out of the pen. It definitely doesn't take him out of starting contention going forward."
Blue Jays' Eric Lauer gives his take on his temporary relief role
MLB.com's Keegan Matheson spoke to Lauer about the move and he seems fine with it.
Spoke with Eric Lauer. He's handling it well and believes he'll be back in the Blue Jays' rotation the next time through. It seems his start day overlapping with Bieber's was just the main factor.
«It's going to be interesting. I'm glad I'm not the one making the decisions"
The addition of Bieber, making his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year, gives the Blue Jays six starters. Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer are the others.
With Shane Bieber entering the rotation on Friday, Eric Lauer will be available out of the Blue Jays' bullpen this weekend 💪
Lauer has been huge for the Blue Jays this season, giving the team much-needed starting depth after some early-season struggles.
He has started in 14 of his 20 appearances, pitching to an 8-2 record and 2.76 ERA overall.
The Blue Jays signed Lauer to a minor-league contract in the off-season and he was called up from triple-A Buffalo on April 30.
