Toronto Blue Jays reliever Nick Sandlin has been placed on the 15-Day IL with right elbow inflammation and the corresponding move was add left-handed relief pitcher Justin Bruihl.
28-year-old Sandlin got two outs in the Blue Jays' series-opening win on Monday against the Chicago White Sox.
He missed multiple months with a right lat strain and returned to Toronto's bullpen on June 20.
In his last outing Bruihl pitched a scoreless one-third of an inning to earn a hold in a win over the New York Yankees, bringing his ERA down to 2.70 in four appearances with the big club this season.
He was previously optioned to Triple-A Buffalo make room for right-hander Lazaro Estrada, who can provide more length out of the bullpen. It had nothing to do with his prior performance.
The Blue Jays signed Bruihl to a minor league deal back in March and has been called up twice so far this season.
Last season, Bruihl only pitched 5.2 innings with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he had a 9.53 ERA and a 4.75 FIP with an 18.5 K% and a 3.7 BB%.
The 27-year-old spent the majority of the season in Triple-A with the Cincinnati Reds and Pirates, where he had a 3.02 ERA and a 4.10 FIP in 41.2 innings pitched, with a 25.1 K% and a 10.7 BB%.
In a small sample size, Bruihl's fastball averaged 90.4 mph with the Pirates last season but usually sat around 88 mph in prior seasons. Bruihl also features an upper-70s sweeper and an upper-80s cutter.
