Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider 'wants Canada to win the Olympics'

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider may have guided his club to the franchise’s first World Series appearance in more than three decades, but he’s still finding new ways to win over Canadian fans.

Speaking from Spring Training in Florida on Thursday, the American League–winning skipper made it clear where his loyalties lie when it comes to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina — specifically men’s hockey.

When asked by Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae who he’ll be cheering for if Canada faces the United States, Schneider didn’t hesitate.

It’s a sentiment shared by countless Canadians, especially with NHL players set to participate in the Olympics for the first time in 12 years.

Though Schneider was born in Princeton, N.J., the 45-year-old has fully embraced his life north of the border.

He even referred to himself as an “honorary Canadian,” aligning himself with those proudly backing the red and white over the red, white and blue.

Schneider also revealed he recently received a Canadian hockey jersey customized with his name on the back, another symbol of his growing connection to the country he now represents on baseball’s biggest stage.

As for Canada’s Olympic hopes, things are off to an encouraging start. The Canadian men opened round-robin play with a commanding 5–0 victory over Czechia on Thursday, moving one step closer to the gold medal Schneider, and much of the nation is hoping to see.
