The Toronto Blue Jays will be able to hang on to a key depth piece for a little while longer.
Outfielder Jonatan Clase has been given an extra option year. This is key as it means that the Blue Jays can freely send him up and down in 2026 without worrying about losing him.
Blue Jays: Jonatan Clase given an additional option year
While the Blue Jays are currently rife with outfielders, Clase having an extra option year could prove beneficial after this season. George Springer and Daulton Varsho are free agents after 2026, while Joey Loperfido is a prime candidate to be traded.
If none of three are in a Jays uniform beyond 2026, then Clase could find himself in a more prominent role come 2027.
The speedster is also still just 23, and while his surface numbers haven't been great, the Blue Jays love his profile and his fielding prowess. He has also shown occasional pop in the minor leagues.
The Blue Jays went through a similar situation last year with Leo Jimenez and Hagen Danner, who were both granted an extra option due to injury. While Danner is no longer with the organization, Jimenez could find himself a job with the club as a back-up infielder thanks to the departure of longtime shortstop Bo Bichette.
Clase should return to majors in 2026
Clase is one of a handful of outfield prospects in the upper minors for the Blue Jays, though so far he is the only one who has reached the major leagues.
And while he will likely be without a full-time role in 2026, he seems poised to nab a reserve role in very near future.
