Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jesús Sánchez appears primed for a breakout campaign under the tutelage of hitting coach David Popkins.

Jesus Sanchez wasted little time making an impression on Toronto Blue Jays fans at Rogers Centre on Sunday afternoon.
The 28-year-old outfielder launched a two-run home run in the first inning, driving a cutter from Nick Martinez over the wall, one of three long balls Toronto hit off the right-hander.
It marked Sánchez’s first home run of the spring, and the timing couldn’t be better.
His approach at the plate has been just as encouraging as the results. Sánchez worked the count to 3-0 by staying disciplined and refusing to chase pitches out of the zone.
Given the green light in a hitter’s count, he capitalized on a 96 mph pitch at the very bottom of the strike zone, hardly an easy offering, and drove it 417 feet over the centre-field wall.
Jesús Sánchez is exactly who you want having the green light on 3-0. He makes an instant impact in his 1st #BlueJays start. This is exactly why TOR traded for him.

Popkins changes in Sanchez's stance and mechanics already paying dividends

Now entering his athletic prime at 28, Sánchez possesses elite raw power that few can match.
Despite posting impressive underlying metrics throughout his MLB career, including a 93rd percentile bat speed in 2025 and a 95th percentile hard-hit rate in 2024, he has yet to fully translate those tools into consistent production.
However, the Blue Jays and hitting coach David Popkins have a strong track record of helping power hitters unlock another level.
There are already signs of progress. Sánchez’s strikeout rate has steadily improved since 2022, dropping from 26.8% to 22.1% in 2025, and he has yet to strike out early in limited action this spring.
Popkins has also implemented mechanical adjustments, encouraging Sánchez to adopt a more upright stance with fewer moving parts in his swing, changes designed to improve consistency and pitch recognition.
The early returns are promising. After failing to homer on pitches 96 mph or faster last season, Sánchez turned around a 96.4 mph fastball for a no-doubt blast in his first start as a Blue Jay.
Acquired from the Houston Astros early in spring training in exchange for Joey Loperfido, Sánchez is already making his presence felt.
He debuted Saturday as a pinch hitter for Myles Straw, going 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI in an 8–7 extra-innings victory.
If these early signs are any indication, Sánchez could be on the verge of putting it all together in Toronto.
