The Toronto Blue Jays are changing up the look outside of Rogers Centre and removing a much-talked-about statue of the team's former billionaire owner.
With plans already announced to unveil a statue honoring Blue Jays legend Joe Carter, the organization will also be removing the statue of Ted Rogers that currently stands outside the stadium.
The bronze sculpture, positioned near Gate 6, has been a point of contention among fans for years, with some criticizing it as an overly grand tribute to a member of the team’s corporate leadership rather than an on-field figure.
The 12-foot statue was unveiled in 2013 and has remained the only monument outside the ballpark honoring a Blue Jays–related figure.
That distinction will soon change, as Carter’s statue is scheduled to be revealed on July 18, coinciding with the removal of the Rogers statue.
Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reported that the Ted Rogers statue will be taken down and moved to a Rogers Communications corporate office.
“We wanted to make space to honour Joe and the championship teams who brought so much joy and pride to fans in every corner of Canada,” Rogers Communications spokesperson Zac Carreiro said. “We look forward to recognizing and celebrating more moments and players over time.”
Ted Rogers founded Rogers Communications and served as its president and CEO from 1967 until his death in 2008.
He also owned the Toronto Blue Jays from 2000 to 2008, playing a notable role in the franchise’s modern history.
While Rogers’ impact on the organization is undeniable, many fans are expected to welcome the shift toward celebrating iconic players, with Joe Carter’s statue serving as a tribute to one of the most beloved figures in Blue Jays history.
