Toronto Blue Jays rookie reliever impresses in MLB debut versus Athletics

It’s rare to witness a Major League debut quite like the one Spencer Miles delivered for the Toronto Blue Jays in Saturday’s 8–7 victory over the Athletics.
A Rule 5 Draft selection from this past offseason, Spencer Miles entered the game and calmly handled the top of the 11th inning, throwing a scoreless frame to set up the win.
At 25 years old, Miles’ path to this moment has been anything but typical.
Multiple surgeries and long stretches away from the mound limited him to just 14 2/3 innings in the Minor Leagues, and he had never pitched above Single-A prior to this season.
Still, he quickly made a strong impression during Spring Training.

Across seven Grapefruit League outings, Miles pushed his way into the conversation for one of the final bullpen spots, showcasing electric upper-90s velocity and a diverse arsenal that includes a four-seam fastball, sinker, and cutter.
He also had to earn his opportunity amid stiff internal competition, notably from fellow Rule 5 pick Angel Bastardo, who ultimately did not make the roster.
Miles, who picked up the win, wasted no time getting involved. A comebacker to the mound led to a well-executed rundown, and he soon recorded his first Major League strikeout by retiring Max Muncy.
Fueled by adrenaline, Miles repeatedly hit 98 mph and capped off his outing by inducing a flyout from Denzel Clarke, drawing a roar from the crowd that likely dwarfed anything he’d experienced in his professional career.

Miles MLB debut was surreal
According to Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith, when Miles was ran out on to the field for the 11th inning he "blacked out a little bit."
Spencer Miles says he “blacked out a little bit” today on the way to his first MLB win. “It’s surreal,” the Rule 5 pick said.
Following the game Miles told The Athletics' Mitch Bannon, that the experience was surreal.
Spencer Miles on making his MLB debut in extras: "We need a pressure cooker for sure. Turn up the leverage, turn up the heat, get some sweat going. It was surreal."
His journey to this point has been anything but predictable, and that’s part of what makes it so compelling.
It’s also why teammates and coaches alike—including Dylan Cease, manager John Schneider, and Ernie Clement, lit up at the mention of his name.
Every player’s road to the big leagues is different, and Miles’ unconventional path has finally brought him to this stage.
