Taking the mound for his 16th start of the season, Scherzer wasn't able to escape the first inning against a free-swinging Royals lineup.
Scherzer was only able to record two outs on 45 pitches, allowing seven runs, two home runs, seven hits and one walk before being lifted from the game in favour of reliever Braydon Fisher.
"I took a haymaker to the face."
Max Scherzer shares his thoughts on a tough outing against the Royals.
"Everything that could go wrong, went wrong," Scherzer said post-game. "I took a haymaker to the face. I made some pitches, they got hits on them. Nothing you can do in those situations. Like I said, I just got beaten in all facets of the game."
There are growing concerns about Max Scherzer's ability to pitch deep into games down the stretch
It's only the second time in Scherzer's career that he has allowed seven runs in a single inning, and it's only the second start that he was pulled from before recording three outs.
The outing raised Scherzer's ERA to 5.06 on the season, as he surrendered six hard-hit balls to the 10 Kansas City hitters he faced. He has now allowed four or more runs in four of his last five starts.
"It's kind of just ebbs and flows," the veteran pitcher explained of his recent struggles. "A lot of times, this has happened to me in the past where I've been struggling in first innings for a little bit, and then all of a sudden I'll flip and then I'll be great for the first innings (but) give up runs in the later part of games.
"We'll deep dive to make sure what is going on ... you pitch long enough, it's going to happen. Obviously, it's very frustrating to be at this part of the season late in September ... I felt great out there, it just stinks to lose like that."
Toronto needs a win and for two of the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians to lose in order to officially clinch a post-season berth.
The Blue Jays will need to author yet another impressive comeback to bring that scenario back into play for Friday night.
"Moving forward, correct this and get physically right," Scherzer added. "Go out there and compete next time out."
