This is the 19th major-league season of Max Scherzer's storied career, but the 41-year-old demonstrated that he still has plenty in the tank in a 5-1 win over the Colorado Rockies.
To say Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer was amped to get his 2026 season started would be an understatement.
Scherzer was spotted in the Blue Jays dugout in "Mad Max" mode 37 minutes before game time.
Once game time arrived, Scherzer couldn't wait for the Blue Jays to be announced so he could run out to the mound.
Not only that but he had to be the first one out on the field, just ask Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Max Scherzer always takes the field first on start days, and Vladdy Jr. respects that rule 😅
Scherzer twirls a gem in his season debut
Once the game got started he was vintage Scherzer, allowing 1 run, 1 walk, on 4 hits, striking out 4 in six innings pitched.
Max Scherzer, Nasty 85mph Slider. 😨
After building his pitch count to 75 in spring training, Scherzer tossed 83 pitches (56 strikes) against Colorado on Tuesday, and the Blue Jays will need to heavily rely on the veteran right-hander due to the absences of Shane Bieber (forearm), Trey Yesavage (shoulder) Jose Berrios (elbow) and, most recently, Cody Ponce (knee).
Ponce was injured in Monday night’s game, meaning Scherzer’s six innings gave the Blue Jays’ bullpen some badly needed rest.
Scherzer is tentatively slated to start next week at home against the Dodgers in a World Series rematch.
