Under the radar signing could earn a spot on the Blue Jays' roster

The former Los Angeles Angels infielder signed a minor league contract with the Blue Jays in early December.

Primarily a second baseman, Stefanic has also seen time at third base in his MLB career and played 63 games at shortstop in the minors.

Though his big league experience is limited-appearing in just 90 games over three seasons-his defensive versatility aligns well with the Blue Jays' philosophy.

Last year, Stefanic posted a .218 average with eight RBIs in 40 games for the Angels.

With the Blue Jays' depth at second base, and Stefanic's relative lack of experience, he might seem like the odd man out. However, things get interesting when you look at the ZiPS projections.

ZiPS, created by FanGraphs, uses comparable players and performance data to project a player's numbers over a full season, factoring in expected at-bats.

If Stefanic stays on the Blue Jays' roster for the entire season, likely in a reserve infielder role, his ZiPS projection suggests a 109 wRC+-an above-average mark for a bench player.

While it seems more likely Stefanic will start the season in Triple-A, he offers a solid, defence-first depth option, which contrasts with players like Davis Schneider and Orelvis Martinez, who are more offensively oriented.

It's not out of the question that Stefanic could see time in a Blue Jays uniform at some point in 2025.
