The New York Mets have released outfielder Vladi Miguel Guerrero, son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero.
According to MLB Insider Hector Gomez, Vladi Miguel Guerrero, son of Hall of Fame slugger Vladimir Guerrero and a half-brother of Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr., was released by the New York Mets.
The New York Mets have released OF Vladi Guerrero, son of HOF Vladimir Guerrero. Vladi Guerrero was signed on January 15, 2024, for a signing bonus of $117,000, plus $60,000 scholarship bonus.
Guerrero has power but has more developing to do
A left-handed hitter from the Dominican Republic, the 17-year-old Guerrero was among the players the Mets reached deals with as a 2024 international signing.
He is the third one of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero Sr.'s nine sons to have signed an MLB deal, with Pablo Guerrero signing with the Texas Rangers last January.
An AL executive said there is real power in Vladi Miguel's bat, but did not think he would hit at the major league level and would be limited to first base and DH.
Unlike other pro sports in North America that typically only allow players to sign contracts after age 18, the MLB has a long-standing history of signing free agents from Central America in their mid-teenage years.
An international player is eligible to sign with a Major League team between Jan. 15 and Dec. 15 each year.
He must turn 16 before he signs and be 17 before Sept. 1 the following year, which means players born between Sept. 1, 2006, and Aug. 31, 2007, will be eligible to sign in the current signing period.
Players must be registered with Major League Baseball in advance to be eligible to sign.
