As Spring Training reaches the halfway point, some questions will be answered and others will lead to more questions.
For the Blue Jays, who don't have a lot of positional battles in camp thiys year, one question gaining steam is who will be on the mound opening day when the welcome the Baltimore Orioles to town on March 27.
Berrios, who has gotten the honours twice before - in 2022 and 2024 - has certainly earned another opportunity with a strong season last year. While Gausman has yet to start opening day for the Blue Jays , he has perhaps been their most consistent pitcher in his three years with the team.
Gausman looked strong in his first spring appearance, while Berrios has been fairly consistent in his three starts. Either would be a deserving choice to take the mound for the Jays.
But another pitcher has entered the fray: Max Scherzer.
When the Blue Jays signed Scherzer in the offseason, the assumption was that he would slot in the number four spot in the rotation. However, he has had a spectacular spring and looks like his old self, having struck out 14 in nine innings, while having an ERA of 2.00.
Scherzer has been an opening day starter seven times in his career, which is as much as the rest of the Blue Jays rotation combined.
Manager John Schneider has even said that it could be a possibility.
Even still, his age and his declining advanced metrics might give the edge to either Gausman or Berrios.
It's a question that probably won't be answered until the last week of camp.
