While the move was widely expected, there was some speculation about how the Blue Jays pitching would line up given Gausman's start in 162.
That, combined with the fact that his final two regular season starts weren't the best left open the possibility that somebody else might get the nod.
At the end of the day however, manager John Schneider is putting his trust in the long-time rotation stalwart.
Schneider and the Blue Jays have not yet named a starter for Game 2. While it is thought to be Shane Bieber, SportsNet's Ben Nicholson-Smith points out that they could do any of number of things, including start Trey Yesavage or have a bullpen day, though the latter option seems less likely.
Jays have a few options w/ their pitching. Bieber G3? Trey G2? Piggyback? Bullpen game? Expect Jays to consider all of the above. Pros & cons to each. Anyone who's super confident that one way is best/worst might be overstating the case. And ultimately, it's on players to perform
While the nature of his role is still unconfirmed, Schneider did indicate that Yesavage will be a part of the postseason roster in some capacity, which may include pitching him out of the bullpen.
It might be wise to have Ice Trey in the pen in case a starter struggles early. Him, combined with Eric Lauer, would give Toronto two long men and could be a key in keeping the pen rested.
If Gausman can pitch like he did in August and beginning of September than the Jays won't need to worry about a long man, but if he runs into trouble at least they will have a plan in place.
