The Boston Red Sox made a series of roster moves following Monday's loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. In addition to putting Connor Wong on the IL with a fractured thumb and calling up Blake Sabol to take his place, they also made changes to their bullpen. They designated Robert Stock for assignment and re-called reliever Josh Winckowski.
Winckowski may be familiar to ardent Blue Jays supporters. Toronto drafted him in the 15th round of the 2016 draft and he spent four seasons in their system, reaching as high as Low-A Dunedin. Throughout those seasons, he went 18-17 with a 3.35 ERA.
The Blue Jays traded him to the New York Mets along with Sean Reid-Foley and Yennsy Diaz for pitcher Steven Matz just prior to the 2021 season. Two weeks later, he was flipped to the Red Sox in a three team deal that also involved the Kansas City Royals. He made his major league debut with the team in 2022.
Even though he never played for the big league club, Winckowski still holds against the Jays for trading him and by his own admission, makes a bigger deal out of it than it needs to be.
I've always been a big chip-on-my-shoulder guy, and sometimes I do the 'fake fire' stuff, so I still hold a grudge against them, to this day, even though it's probably not warranted. «I just fake it. Anytime I play them, I just want to do extremely well. Even just giving up a hit to them drives me crazy.»
Maybe he'll get his wish.
For his career, Winckowski is 13-13 with a 4.21 ERA, with 21 starts and five saves in 115 games.
