In a move that no one saw coming, the Toronto Blue Jays have designated pitcher Alek Manoah for assignment.

It's a move that corresponds with Anthony Santander's return to the lineup. The slugger was activated today while first baseman Ty France was put on the 10 day IL.

News: The Blue Jays have DFA'd Alek Manoah
After being selected to his first All-Star game in 2022, Manoah was named the Blue Jays opening day starter to begin the 2023 season. It did not go well, and the Florida native ended up being demoted in early August. After returning in early 2024, he was shut down with an injury that June. He has not pitched in the majors since.

Lack of update earlier in the day brought confusion, rumours

Keegan Matheson had noted that something felt strange about the Blue Jays update - or lack of one regarding Santander. With the decision to DFA Manoah and many other moving parts, the slowness of the announcement makes more sense.
Like I said to a few of my beloved colleagues pre-game, perhaps with some extra words mixed in, something felt strange about the Santander update.

Makes sense now, given the other moving parts and the decision to DFA Alek Manoah. Completely surprised by that move. #BlueJays
It's a bold move by the Blue Jays, one that will surely send shockwaves throughout the league.
