The Toronto Blue Jays have signed two more international pitchers. Right hander Erinyel Marquez joined the team on Monday, while left hander Luis Fonseca was announced on Tuesday.
MLB insider and prospect expert Francys Romero first reported the Fonseca signing, while Marquez was listed on the transactions page of the Blue Jays website.
Romero reports that Fonseca, who is the 23rd Cuban to sign during the International Free Agent signing period, inked a deal for $10 000 after spending several months trying out in the Dominican Republic.
Not much information is available about Marquez, but the 18 year old pitcher appears to be from Venezuela, according to Instagram posts from both Cacon Academy and RC Program Baseball, the latter of which is based in Cabudare, in the province of Lara.
Both Marquez and Fonseca were assigned to the DSL Blue Jays in the Dominican Republic, as is typical for many of their IFA deals. Both had previously been playing at working out there.
At 22, Fonseca is the older of the two players, which is often the case for athletes who defect from Cuba.
According to Baseball Reference, Fonseca's stats in the Cuban League are 1-1 with a 4.85 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 59.1 innings across 27 games, which includes seven starts. His second year was much than his first.
Thanks to extra international pool money they acquired from the Cleveland Guardians, the Blue Jays have now signed over 30 international free agents.
Fonseca is managed by Omar Delgado of DM Sports Management.
