In his last start against the New York Mets Kevin Gausman took the loss for Toronto going 5.1 innings. He surrendered three earned runs on just two hits and two walks. He didn't record a single strikeout, which marked some odd personal history for him.
This marked just the fifth time in Gausman's 331 career games that he's been stuck with a «zero» in the strikeout category. The others include three quick, ugly starts and an early ejection from 2017. Friday was one of a kind, and Gausman's five whiffs on 87 pitches were the 10th-fewest he's had in a start.
The 34-year-old veteran is now an even 103-103 in his career. He owns a lifetime 3.84 ERA. A 13-year veteran of the Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants and Blue Jays, he's won double-digit games in six different seasons.
Tanner Houck gets the ball for the Red Sox tonight, in his last outing Houck did not factor into the decision in Thursday's 8-4 win over Baltimore, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out six.
While Houck was staked to a 4-1 lead after two innings, the right-hander failed to qualify for a win after needing 82 pitches to make it through four frames.
It's been a shaky start to the year for Houck, who's now given up seven runs across 9.2 innings in his first two outings. He'll look to get on track in tonight's start at home against the Blue Jays.
Boston had an 81-81 record overall and a 38-43 record at home last season. The Red Sox averaged 8.7 hits per game last season while batting a collective .252.
Toronto had a 74-88 record overall and a 35-46 record on the road last season. The Blue Jays pitching staff had a collective 4.30 ERA while averaging 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings in the 2024 season.
