Richard Lovelady pitching for the Blue Jays

The Minnesota Twins have signed left-handed pitcher Richard Lovelady to a minor league deal. He has been assigned to Triple-A St. Paul who also announced the deal. Zone Coverage's Theodore Tollefson reported the signing before the announcement.

The moves comes a few a days after Lovelady was DFA'd by the Toronto Blue Jays. He opted to reject an outright assignment and elected free agency. Now he has a new home.
The deal makes sense for the Twins, who have a very right handed-heavy bullpen. Danny Coulombe is currently the only lefty on the active roster, while Kody Funderburk is in Triple-A on optional assignment. Lovelady will join Anthony Misiewicz as non-roster lefty depth options.
Lovelady appeared in two games for the Blue Jays, allowing four runs in 1.2 innings. More concerning though, was his seeming lack of control, hitting three batters and walking two.
Those troubles followed him from Spring Training. Although he struck out eight batters in 8.1 innings of work, he allowed seven runs, walked three and hit three.
As a non-roster player, Lovelady looks to stay in the minors while he works on his control issues. He is also out of options, meaning that if the Twins were to purchase his contract, he could not be sent down without first clearing waivers.
If he does get called up, the Twins will be his sixth major league team. Besides the Blue Jays, Lovelady has also suited up for the Royals, Athletics, Cubs, and Rays.
For his career, he is 5-13 with a 5.26 ERA with three saves and 93 strikeouts with 101.1 innings pitched across 110 games.
