Detroit Tigers Assistant General Manager Sam Menzin resigned on Thursday, April 3rd. He had served in the role since 2021 and was even the acting GM for about six weeks after Al Avila was fired.
While no reason was given initially, it later came to light that Menzin was under investigation for sending photos of his genitals to female staffers and was about to be fired before he tendered his resignation.
The Athletic's Britt Ghiroli and Cody Stavenhagen both contributed to the report.
Although Menzin is only in his mid-30s, he had been working for the Tigers for over a decade, starting off as front office intern in 2012. As he worked his way up the corporate ladder, many of his roles focused on development. Recently however, he was put in charge of overseeing upgrades to the Tigers' Spring Training facility.
The Tigers should be able to fill Menzin's role internally, as he was one of four assistant GM's underneath Scott Harris, alongside Ryan Garko, Rob Metzler, and Jay Sartori.
The Tigers released a statement following Menzin's resignation.
«Upon being made aware of the allegations as to Sam Menzin's conduct, the club promptly completed an investigation. Before the club could terminate Mr. Menzin, he resigned.

This type of behavior is contrary to our standards and has absolutely no place within our organization. We have a positive and safe culture for our colleagues and will continue to emphasize respect, inclusion, and professionalism.»

Menzin is not the first front office staffer to be ingulfed in a sexual misconduct scandal. Back in 2019, the Houston Astros famously fired assistant GM Brandon Taubman after his outburst in defence of alleged domestic abuser and former Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna, as well as his disrespect towards a female reporter who would tweet out a domestic abuse hotline number every time Osuna took the mound.
He was later banned from MLB for a year.
No word yet on whether Menzin will receive any discipline for the league.
