Blue Jays infielder listed among rookies set to make an impact

He was one of 11 players named and the only Blue Jays player on the list.

Both Blue Jays fans and the organization fell in love with Wagner after his strong debut in 2024. In 24 games, he went .305/.331/.451 with four home runs, before a knee injury prematurely ended his season.

After the Blue Jays acquired Andres Gimenez, Wagner found himself blocked at 2nd base, his most natural position. With the additional addition of Anthony Santander, there were concerns about how much playing he'd receive.

But Wagner will get playing time because of his hitting, his strongest asset. In just his 16th big league game, Wagner collected five hits. No other Blue Jays had accomplished that within their first 50 career games, much less their first 20.

He also had seven hits through his first four games.

Wagner is athletic enough to play multiple positions and will see time at both first base (where he appeared a few times last year) and third base during the Spring, as well as second.

Wagner is familiar with the hot corner, as he shifted between second and third while in the minor leagues.

If Wagner can get regular at-bats playing 1st, 2nd, or third, with some DH days mixed in, then he should be able to pick up where he left off.

Moving around so much can be hard on a young player though, just ask Cavan Biggio.

Expect Wagner to be the opening day DH.
