The Toronto Blue Jays good luck uniform is only growing in legend, and one Blue Jays legend counts himself a fan.
Pat Hentgen, Cy Young winner, member of the 1992 and 1993 World Series-winning teams, and currently a special advisor to the Blue Jays organization, is all onboard with the Jays' use of the retro-looking white panel hats that have become the team's good luck charm over the past couple of weeks.
"I think that you have to believe to receive and with the white hat, if guys feel comfortable and more confident, then it's good. I agree with the manager (John Schneider): 'it's the only hat I brought."
In Hentgen's day, the panel caps were standard issue uniforms, and wore them during the World Series against the Atlanta Braves, which they won in six games.
White-panel caps are back in Toronto's ALDS run as a confidence booster, with Pat Hentgen-World Series champ and Jays pitching advisor-endorsing their luck effect against the Yankees. John Schneider's quip that it's the only hat he brought underscores the superstition-reality mix fuelling the Jays' late-season surge
A modernized version of the classic wear was first introduced in 2015, but only came into purview the last week of the season thanks to closer Jeff Hoffman.
Blue Jays are undefeated while wearing the white panel caps
Hentgen spent a decade in the Blue Jays organization and wore many different hats. The white one was always his favourite. He says he remembers breaking into the bigs while the Jays still wore their famous powder blue unis with the grey caps.
Then when I got to the big leagues, we wore grey. so I love the white hat. I still think the home white uniform is the best uniform. It's one of the better uniforms in baseball
Going back to the last week of the regular season, the Blue Jays are undefeated since they started wearing the caps.
I'm sure Hentgen is among the legions of fans hoping that that streak will continue tonight in New York.
