The Los Angeles Angels have signed free-agent third baseman Yoan Moncada to a one-year, $5 million deal.
Jon Heyman, baseball writer for the New York Post and MLB Insider, was the first to report the news.
The deal is pending a physical, and once finalized, the Angels will need to make a corresponding move to their 40-man roster. Blue Jays were briefly linked to Moncada as a third baseman earlier in the offseason, it remains unclear whether formal discussions took place between the two sides.
Aside from a brief stint with the Red Sox in 2016, Moncada has spent his entire career with the Chicago White Sox. His best season came in 2019, when he hit 25 home runs, drove in 79 RBIs, and posted a .315 batting average.
In addition to the Blue Jays, the Mariners and Cubs were also reportedly connected to Moncada. According to Spanish-language insider Francys Romero, the Cubs offered Moncada a $3 million contract, which he declined. It remains uncertain whether the Blue Jays or Mariners made formal offers to the third baseman.
With Moncada's departure, the White Sox are expected to turn to prospect Matt Shaw to take over at third base. They also recently signed former Blue Jays infielder Jon Berti, who can play third, second, and shortstop.
Meanwhile, the Angels have indicated that Moncada will take on the everyday third-base role, with Anthony Rendon likely starting the season on the bench.
For his career, Moncada owns a .254/.331/.424 slash line with 93 home runs and 339 RBIs.
