George Springer's Blue Jays return may be delayed yet again.
The outfielder remains out of the triple-A Buffalo Bisons lineup on Saturday as he continues to battle a concussion.
However, Springer, who's currently with the Bisons for a brief rehab stint, has yet to join Buffalo's starting lineup.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider explains why George Springer isn't able to start his rehab with the Buffalo Bisons to Shi Davidi
Sportsnet's Shi Davidi spoke with Blue Jays manager John Schneider ahead of game two against the Dodgers on what exactly was keeping Springer from starting his rehab assignment.
Davidi explains that there are several criteria that a player has to meet when it comes to MLB's concussion protocol, but something in there is preventing Springer from getting started with his rehab.
It starts with the team doctor feeling that the player is ready to start a rehab assignment.
At that point they have to file an application with MLB's medical director and the players union concussion doctor to get clearance.
Now in order for them to grant clearance they're going to look at a couple of other elements.
First is the player has to be symptom free both at rest and when they have some sort of physical exertion explains Davidi.
Second is the players baseline testing in the impact concussion testing system has to be back to normal.
And so if a player if a meets all of those elements, then they are cleared to return to play.
We are not sure which of those elements George Springer has yet not met said Davidi, but something in there is preventing him from not yet getting started.
So right now John Schneider told us again today that Springer continues to get better as he is making progress but not enough yet to get through that protocol to and be able to be cleared for resumption of play.
"He's feeling better every day," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. "He's hitting, running, today he's taking fly balls off a bat in the outfield. As soon as he can get clearance from the MLB, (he'll) probably play in a game, see how he feels and go from there.
In 101 games, he's slashing .291/.383/.506 with 57 RBIs and is tied for a team-high with 18 home runs.
