In a Sportsnet pregame segment Max Scherzer sat down with Hazel Mae in the dugout for an interview and the first thing she brought up is what happed to Eric Lauer's lip.
Our pregame dugout chat with this guy had a few laughs. You'll be mad if you miss it.
First word to come out of Mad Max's mouth were:
"No I did not punch Eric Lauer in the face!" (While laughing)
Scherzer explained that Lauer had an issue with his lip and went to the doctor.
Upon his return it was bruised and stitched. Chris Bassitt told Lauer that "you can't tell the media that, you will have to come up with a better story."
Blue Jays' Chris Bassitt and Eric Lauer come up with story about Max Scherzer punching him in the face
So Bassitt and Lauer came up with the idea to blame it on Max Scherzer.
Bassitt explained how nobody is supposed to mess with Max during his pre-game routine, "we will use that in the story Bassitt said, we'll say you interrupted him when he had his head phones on, which resulted in six stitches and a fat lip."
So Bassitt and Lauer approached Scherzer with the idea of this story and how Lauer is going to tell the media that Max puched him in the face and laughs immediately ensued among the three teammates.
Scherzer told Hazel Mae that "they're right about the headphones, "everybody knows not to interrupt me when I have my headphones on."
Scherzer told Lauer that "there is no way you will be able to get up there in front of everybody and recite this story with a straight face."
Scherzer told Mae, "To his credit he was able to keep a straight face he fooled a lot of people, including you Hazel."
"It's funny Scherzer said. Mad Max is a persona, it's who I am on the mound, I am a completely different person in the dugout and and at home than I am on game day. My wife thinks it's hysterical, it makes for great stories and a lot of laughs."
Hazel then asked Scherzer about his dugout behavior and mannerisms. It always seems like you are engaged with teammates coaches and fellow pitchers during every game in the dugout.
Do you find that helps you on the days that you pitch or is it just about sharing information? asked Mae
"Both Scherzer replied, "we are all on the same wave length, we all pull for each other and we really work well as a unit."
During the game I'm always invested and engaged with my teammates we have a great culture in a winning atmosphere on a confident team who beleives they can win no matter what the situatation. It's awesome.
