It's been a busy final day at the Winter Meetings.
On the heels of Pete Alonso's massive deal with the Baltimore Orioles, the 2025 Rule 5 draft got underway.
As a refresher, any player selected in the major league portion of the Rule 5 draft has to remain on that team's active roster or on the IL for the entire season. If not, he has to be offered back to his original team at half the price.
In the Major League portion of the draft, Toronto chose Spencer Miles, a right-handed from the San Francisco Giants. Miles is interesting, as he missed most of last year recovering from Tommy John surgery and only made his 2025 debut in the Arizona Fall League.
The #BlueJays have selected 25-year-old RHP Spencer Miles from the Giants in the Rule 5 Draft.
He had Tommy John surgery in 2024 but had just returned in the 2025 Arizona Fall League.
The Blue Jays went through something similar last year with their pick Angel Bastardo, who spent the entire year on the injured list. While it's certainly possible that Miles begins 2026 on the IL, he appears to be in good shape to make an impact on the major league roster at some point next season.
In two seasons in the minors, Miles has had ten appearances (three starts) and is 2-0 with a 4.30 and 22 strikeouts in 14.2 innings.
Blue Jays also select two in minor league portion of draft
In addition to Miles, the Blue Jays also selected two players in the minor league portion of the draft. This works the same as the major league except players are chosen from Double-A or level and will be on the team's Triple-A Roster.
