The Toronto Blue Jays have signed international free agent pitcher Giacomo Taschin. Like most of these signings, the lefty was assigned to the DSL Blue Jays.

What makes Taschin different however is that he is not from the Dominican Republic, or anywhere in Latin America or the Caribbean. Rather, the 18 year old is from Rovigo, Italy.
The youngster, who ispart of a growing baseball culture in Italy, made his Serie A debut with his hometown club Itas Mutua Rovigo in 2022. He pitched well from the get-go and in 2024 posted a dominant 0.28 ERA in the 2024 season, notching 3 wins, 6 saves, and 48 strikeouts over 32 innings, helping lead Rovigo to the U-18 Championships.
He also previously won two European titles with Italy's U12 and U13 teams. Recently, e was invited to the Elite National Team training camp, managed by former big league catcher Francisco Cervelli.
Harry Einbinder, the scout who first noticed Taschin is excited for his future.
Watching Giacomo's development both on and off the field has been incredibly rewarding. He's a special player with great family support, and we're excited to see what he can do at the professional level.»

Taschin is one of five minor leaguers born and raised in Italy currently on a minor league roster with an MLB team. Former Mariners third baseman Alex Liddi became the first native Italian to play in MLB when he made his debut in 2011.
Back in his hometown, the community is getting ready to celebrate.
«We've watched Giacomo grow from a boy doing incredible things to a young man pursuing his dream. His success belongs to the entire Rovigo baseball and softball family. On June 7, we'll celebrate together - with representatives from the Toronto Blue Jays - in the place where it all began.» - Mutua Rovigo President Alessandro Boniolo.

Congratulations Giacomo. Welcome to the Blue Jays family.
