The Athletics are promoting Gunnar Hoglund. The former first round draft pick and highly touted pitching prospect is set to make his major league debut.
ESPN's Jeff Passan was the first to report the news.
Hoglund was the 19th overall pick by the
Toronto Blue Jays out of Ole Miss in 2021. Drafted out of college, he received a $3.2MM signing bonus, and decided to forgo his final year.
However, he never got a chance to develop with the Jays as he ended being included as a part of a package the Jays to Oakland in exchange for All-Star third baseman
Matt Chapman.
Now 25, his development was also slowed by an elbow injury, one which eventually required Tommy John surgery.
The timing is perfect too as the A's have essentially been working with a four man rotation over the past couple of weeks. Now Hoglund is set to join Luis Severino, J.P. Sears, Jeffrey Springs, and Osvaldo Bido.
As it's now May, Hoglund also won't accrue a full year of service time, even if he stays in the majors for the rest of the year.
His stats have slightly increased this year as well, with his average fastball up a couple of ticks at 93mph and his strikeout rate at 26.1%, up from the 22.7% it was at last year.
An effective Hoglund could be a nice boon for the A's, who currently rank 26th in the majors with a 4.66 ERA among starters and have the eighth highest bullpen ERA.
No corresponding move is necessary as Hoglund is already on the 40-man roster.
