The Toronto Blue Jays have signed left-handed reliever Justin Bruihl to a minor league contract. The deal was first announced by Aram Leighton of Just Baseball Media.
After spending 2024 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Bruihl elected minor league free agency at the end of the season, after being outrighted off the Piratesroster back in July
Bruihl has appeared in each of the last four seasons, although he has only 26 career games under his belt. While his last couple of go-rounds haven't gone great, he did find success in his early seasons with the Dodgers.
Signed by Los Angeles as an undrafted free agent in 2017, Bruihl made his debut with the club four years later. In that 2021 campaign, he appeared in 21 games - including two starts - compiling an 0-2 record with a 2.89 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 17 innings.
While his major league strikeout rate is on the low-end, his 26.55% in the minors does indicate some promise.
The Blue Jays could use more left-handed depth as well. Brendon Little is likely to start the season with the team, as is Ryan Yarbrough. Josh Walker is also competing for a spot. Easton Lucas and Adam Macko, both starters, are the only other southpaws currently on the 40-man roster.
Given how late it is in Spring Training, Bruihl most likely stays on the minor league side of camp and will open the season in Triple-A.
For his career, Bruihl is 2-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 79 games. He has 51 strike outs in 76 innings, with two starts and one save.
