Blue Jays still have tough roster decisions to make

Jacob Barnes, Alan Roden, and Myles Straw were all selected for the opening day roster yesterday. Now, they all need spots on the 40-man roster. This means three other people will have to go.

One unfortunate victim will be Tommy Nance. The reliever is out of options and will have to DFA'd and exposed to waivers. This should clear a spot for Barnes. This is where things get tricky.

Ryan Burr and Zach Pop are also out of options, but they are both starting the year on the IL and it doesn't feel like the Jays will cut two pitchers for two position players. Easton Lucas is probably also safe, given that he is now a starter.

Addison Barger and Orelvis Martinez aren't going anywhere. Leo Jimenez is a possibility, but he has an extra option year, is a great defender, and would be better trade bait than outright released.

That leaves the most likely candidates as outfielder Steward Berroa and relief pitcher Nick Robertson.

Robertson appeared in a game for the Blue Jays last year and two games during Spring Training. He was effective but he also very much like other pitchers they already have.

As for Berroa, everyone in the organization loves him and his personality, but there are already six outfielders on the team, Barger will be up soon, and Daulton Varsho will also be coming back. It doesn't feel like there is a ton of opportunity here for Berroa.

The Blue Jays have until Wednesday to make their decisions.
