Kevin Gausman brought a 1-1 record into his last outing at Fenway, fresh off his performance against the New York Mets, where he did not record a single strikeout, a rarity for someone accustomed to racking up Ks.
Gausman tossed 8.0 innings with 10 strikeouts, zero walks and zero earned runs in last Wednesday's win over the Boston Red Sox, becoming the first Toronto Blue Jays pitcher ever to achieve the feat.
It was vintage Gausman in going eight complete innings.
According to Sportsnet Stats, Gausman became the first pitcher in Blue Jays franchise history with zero earned runs, zero walks and 10-plus strikeouts in a start against the Red Sox.
Gausman was 9-10 with a 4.40 ERA, 1.239 WHIP and 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings in 31 career appearances against the Red Sox.
The 34-year-old two-time All-Star spent six seasons with the Baltimore Orioles prior to his four seasons in Toronto, broken up by his stints with the Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants.
Spencer Schwellenbach gets the ball for the Braves this evening. In 21 starts last season in Atlanta, Schwellenbach had a 3.35 ERA with only 23 walks and 127 strikeouts in 123 2/3 innings.
This season has been even better, as Schwellenbach has an 0.45 ERA with one run allowed in 20 innings heading into his fourth start tonight at Rogers Centre. That's a 2.94 ERA in his first 24 MLB starts.
While the Braves have not had an ideal start to 2025, Schwellenbach provides a much-needed boost to Atlanta's rotation this year.
