The 19-year old is tearing it up as the youngest regular in the Northwest League and Nimmala has been flying up Baseball America's Top 100 list this season.
Nimmala started the season around the 90s, but jumping to 58th in their May update, and now up to 41st. It makes sense, as the shortstop is having a terrific season with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, slashing .286/.372/.510 for a 140 wRC+.
Double-digit homers for Arjun Nimmala! The Blue Jays' No. 1 prospect, the youngest qualified player in the High-A Northwest League clubs his 10th jack of the year for the Vancouver Canadians.
Being the youngest regular in the Northwest League, what is the challenge playing against older players and what has been the key to your success so far?
I think it's just been about getting better everyday, taking it day bay day you know its a process for me it's not so much looking at the numbers you know, it's just doing what I can every day. I don't think age or them being older has any significance to anything because were are all just out there to compete.
On their most recent list Baseball America ranked you the 41st best prospect in the game. How much do you pay attention to stuff like that?
Not much you know, I think every kid kind of looks at the little things, I've seen them, I'm not going to lie to you, Its a pretty cool accomplishment I would say, but it's nothing to really focus on. My focus is on winning and getting better everyday.
You have a real chance to become baseball's first Indian-American superstar. What does that mean to you?
It means a lot you know I think up until now its always been baseball first I've never even correlated being Indian to playing baseball or sports in general. It's always just been about having a passion for the game and I was going to chase it and become the best player that I can be. But now there are bigger things to it and I'd love to inspire young Indian kids to continue playing sports, so I think it's pretty cool and a once in a lifetime opportunity.
You got into six Grapefruit League games this spring, what does that experience do for a 19-year old like yourself?
It's huge, I think any chance a kid gets to play with the big-league sqaud whether it be spring training or anything I think it's huge to learn from those guys and be able to pick their brains at what they do to be an everyday big-leaguer.
Is there a mojor league shortstop you model your game after or one that you would say is a solid comp for yourself?
I wouldn't say I model my game after anyone, I think personally I'm trying to be the best Arjun Nimmala there is. I do like watching Francisco Lindor a lot, he is someone I get to practice with in the offseason due to being in the same agency. He is a guy who takes his work very seriously, he's having fun all the time.
If you had a message for Blue Jays fans what would it be?
That's a very hard question to answer. I think just keep trusting in the guys you know, not only me, I think the Blue Jays are a great organization and were going to win, I think that is the biggest thing is that were going to find ways to win.
