The cold weather strikes again. The Blue Jays' road trip through the frigid northeast has brought about some challenging situations and has led to some minor injuries for a few of the players.
First, it was George Springer, who left the final game of series against the Mets with back spasms after crashing into the outfield wall, and now Chris Bassitt after his solid start against the Boston Red Sox is also feeling the pain.
Bassitt left Thursday's game in the fifth inning with two on, two out, and one run in after throwing just 86 pitches. Under ordinary circumstances, he probably would have finished the frame and possibly come back out to start the sixth, especially for a guy like Bassitt, who has led the charge for Blue Jays starters to go deep into games early in the season, but everything is wonky in cold weather.
After the game, manager John Schneider that Chris Bassitt was dealing with some neck spasms, which is part of the reason why he didn't reach 100 pitches. He adapted to the soreness and the cold weather however, to turn in another solid start for the Blue Jays' rotation.
The muscles of a human body tend to tighten up a lot quicker in colder weather. That, coupled with teams being overly cautious early in the season, led to an early exit for Bassitt.
The injury doesn't appear to be anything serious and Bassitt is on track to make his next start.
The Blue Jays will get a bit of reprieve from the weather as they hit Baltimore for a three game series against the Orioles. While there is a chance of light rain, temperatures are supposed somewhat warmer, with a high of 18 and a low 9 degrees.
