Daulton Varsho is counting down the days until he can return. After putting off his rehab for a few days due to the birth of child, Varsho is in the lineup today for single-A Dunedin.
According to
Blue Jays insider
Keegan Matheson, Varsho is scheduled to play a few games in Dunedin. This will be followed by a few games in Triple-A Buffalo. This tracks with him returning at the end of April.
Varsho has sidelined September with a shoulder issue and underwent offseason surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff.
The Jays are looking forward to getting Varsho back in the lineup. Myles Straw has held his own, filling in in centre field. George Springer and Nathan Lukes have also appeared in centre.
Varsho is the reigning Gold Glove winner. While his offence was not where anyone wanted it to be, his hitting appears to be coming around as he slugged for home runs in Spring Training, where he appeared in several games as designated hitter.
When Varsho returns, the Blue Jays will be faced with a difficult decision as to who send down to Triple-A.
While Lukes hasn't had the strongest start offensively, he has made a couple of nice defensive plays. Speaking of defence, Addison Barger tied a Blue Jays record with three outfield assists in Fridays game.
Both of them are lefties, as is Varsho. Alan Roden could also be demoted, but the Blue Jays like what they see and he has essentially become an everyday player through the first 20 games of the season.
Whatever happens, it will be good to have Varsho back.
