Will Daulton Varsho be ready for opening day? It's a question that has remained unanswered this the start of Spring Training.
While the initial belief was that Varsho would miss the first couple of weeks of the regular season as he works his way back from offseason rotator cuff surgery, a week or into camp it appeared as though he was ahead of schedule.
Manager John Schneider, who has been asked about the health of the centre fielder a few times over the last couple of days, said he should have a definitive answer by the end of the week.
While Varsho has been hitting up a storm during Grapefruit League play, including hitting four home runs, questions have lingered about whether or not his throwing will be at 100%.
While he has increased his distance to 120 feet, there are a few other aspects he needs to lock down, namely velocity.
While in theory,Varsho could open the season as the DH, but the playing time of Will Wagner is something that will be need to be taken into consideration.
If the Blue Jays do decide that Varsho's arm needs more time to recover, they have several options available in centre. Myles Straw, a gold glove winner himself, has also been very good offensively and would be the most logical choice. Jonathan Clase, Joey Loperfido, Nathan Lukes, and even Steward Berroa also have experience in centre.
If Varshois ready to go, then look for him to start opening day in centre, but have a few DH days mixed in in the first couple of weeks in order not to overwork his arm.
Opening day is March 27th against the Baltimore Orioles.
