We now know the inner workings of the contract the Toronto Blue Jays recently signed with starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull. The deal was first announced on Saturday before being made official on Monday by the club.
Now, insider
Jon Heyman is offering up numbers on what exactly the contract looks like.
Like is often the case with signings that happen min-season, the deal has a low base salary and is laden with lots of incentives.
Turnbull is set to make roughly $1.265MM ($1.265,306MM to be exact), of which $1MM is pro-rated. A pro-rated contract basically means it puts the contract in line with number of days actually worked.
For example, a player on a split contract would earn the pro-rated portion of his Major League salary for any time spent on the Major League roster. That is determined by dividing his Major League salary by 183 (the number of days in the MLB regular season) and multiplying that number by the number of days spent on the Major League roster.
Turnbull's deal also comes with incentives. He gets a $100k each if he hits 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 innings pitched, and $125K for 60 days on active MLB roster, plus $25K each for 80 and 100 days, and $375K for 120 days.
Incentives are often a great way for a team to protect themselves financially against a long-term and affords the player an opportunity to work to stay healthy. With Turnbull's injury history, it's a deal that makes sense for both sides.
Given that Turnbull hasn't pitched at all in 2025, he was optioned to the Florida Complex League where he can attend extended Spring Training and ramp up for his season debut.
Look for him to make his debut in a few weeks time.
