Ernie Clement would like a word thank you very much.
The popular infielder for the Toronto Blue Jays responded after broadcasters for the Baltimore Orioles made remarks questioning the baseball IQ of the team's fanbase.
For those not in the know, during Friday's game between the Orioles and the Blue Jays, the Orioles broadcasters mocked Jays fans for booing a pickoff throw to first base in the ninth inning.
Although this is a common and regular occurrence, Orioles play-by-play announcer Kevin Brown went off.
Sometime we had some major questions about the baseball IQ of Canadians. Maybe they know a little bit more about hockey than baseball
Needless to say, Jays fans weren't too happy. Now Clement has responded.
We get 40,000 a night here. I mean, they probably get 5,000 a night, so it makes sense that you'd be a little salty about that.
Clement made the remarks in an interview with the Toronto Star.
The fanbase went through this in 2015
The Blue Jays fanbase went through something similar in 2015. During the legendary ALDS, broadcaster and analyst Harold Reynolds said that that due to Canadians being more familiar with hockey, they probably aren't used to catching things.
The remarks caused such an outrage that Reynolds was forced to apologize on-air on Canada's biggest network 48 hours later.
The Blue Jays fan base is passionate, intelligent and well-travelled.
Fortunately, Brown and his colleague, former Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, shut down the critique fairly quickly, but the damage had already been done.
To his credit, Roberts issued an apology during Sunday's game.
Lesson learned.
