The Chicago White Sox have signed outfielder Joshua Palacios to a minor league contract. The deal comes after Palacios was outrighted by the Pirates on March 29th. Palacios had rejected the assignment and became a free agent instead.
Robert Murray of FanSided was the first to report the signing.
A 4th round draft pick of the
Blue Jays in 2016, Palacios made a brief debut with the team in 2021. He then found his way to the
Nationals before playing with Pittsburgh the last two seasons.
While Palacios has yet to put it all together in the major leagues, he has had success in the minors and as often found himself bouncing back-and-forth several times a year. His last option was used up in 2024.
Palacios' best season was in 2023, when he 10 home runs in 91 games. However, his slash line was only .239/.279/.413 with an 85 OPS+. He couldn't replicate his power in 2024.
In spite of his lack of numbers at the big level, two aspects that Palacios has going for him are speed and versatility. He has played all three outfield positions in the majors, with 86 games in RF, 42 in LF, and 17 in CF. He has also made eight appearances at DH.
While he has limited stole bases in the majors, he did steal a high of 15 bases in Double-A New Hampshire.
If Palacios can get it together, he'll be a valuable depth piece for a re-building White Sox Team.
