Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic were the first to report the news.
Major League Baseball and its Players Union agreed to a "World Tour" of sorts before the most recent CBA was negotiated in 2022. Originally MLB had plans for games in Mexico in 2020 before they were cancelled due to the pandemic. Eventually, the Padres and
Giants met there for a two game series in 2023.
While the Tokyo Series earlier this month was a great success, picking up the trail of last year's London Series, other talked about international events won't happen for economic reasons. The CBA had approved expenses for games in Mexico City, Paris, and San Juan. There also won't be a London Series this year.
While there will be no regular season games in Mexico City this year, the
Boston Red Sox did play a couple of exhibition games against a team from Monterrey.
MLB has been reach in recent years. Not only have regular-season games happened in Iowa and Alabama, but the league also has European Ambassadors, who represent the game in the U.K. Series have also happened in Puerto Rico and Cuba.
A lot of factors, both internal and external, will come into play and it is not yet known whether the Mexico City Series will happen.
However, based on the success of the Tokyo Series, it's definitely something that both the league and players association should think about.
