Jay Jackson is calling it a career after nearly two decades in professional baseball. The former pitcher made the announcement in an emotional post on social media.
Jackson spent six season in Major League Baseball, as well as four season in NPB in Japan. He suited up for the
Padres,
Brewers,
Giants,
Braves,
Blue Jays, and
Twins, as well as Hiroshima Tokyo Carp and Chiba Lotte Marines.
Drafter by the
Chicago Cubs in the ninth round of the 2008 draft, Jackson spend several in the minor leagues, passing through the systems of the Marlins and Pirates, before making his debut in 2013.
He had signed a contract with the Bravos de Leon in February but never suited up for them.
Jackson's best year was arguably 2023 when he played for the Blue Jays. After signing a minor league deal, he was released a re-signed to a minor-league contract. He promptly went 3-1 with a 2.12 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 29.2 innings over 25 games. He was released at season's end.
While his career numbers were that of an average ballplayer, Jackson had a larger-than-life personality that oozed happiness and positivity. In December, he self-published and released a self-help-like book about the same subjects.
For his career, Jackson is 7-4 with a 4.43 ERA and 136 strikeouts across six seasons with six teams. His numbers in Japan are better in some respects, going 10-8 with a 2.16 ERA and 220 strikeouts in four seasons.
